About the Book

Nineteen years ago, Richard E. Dean, MD, FACS, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University, first conceived this manual to assist surgical residents in preparing for the American Board of Surgery In-Service Training Exam (ABSITE). This edition represents a continuation of this tradition. The format of the manual and the care taken in its preparation has remained consistent through the move to East Carolina University. We have improved the 2014 edition based on feedback from 2007 through 2013 editions.

The 2014 Richard E. Dean ABSITE Review has been organized to present responses to keywords by organ system and by exam topics, in an effort to help residents gain a better grasp of the areas in which they will be tested. The table of contents organizes the manual by organ system.

The surgical residents and faculty at East Carolina University have carefully reviewed the content to ensure the presented information is accurate, up to date, and concise in this edition. References from standard textbooks are also included to allow the resident the opportunity to expand upon the information provided.
