About DRM

DigitalRights Management (DRM) is an umbrella term for the concepts and supporting technology needed to protect the ownership rights content.
Features that may be limited or restricted in certain DRM circumstances:

  • Viewing
  • Highlighting and note taking
  • Printing
  • Emailing/sharing of specific content

Desktop Users – PC

  • A plug-in is NOT required to download or access DRM protected PDFs
  • Students who wish to highlight and take notes using a Windows operating system  will need to use Adobe Acrobat Professional or Adobe Acrobat Standard
  • Students using Adobe Acrobat Reader using a Windows operating system will also be able to highlight and take notes by downloading and installing the free Foxit Reader.  Download instructions are available at www.xanedu.com/Foxit.

Important Adobe Settings to Change

You will see the following the first time you try to open a DRM protected PDF:

Change your Adobe Settings by following these instructions:

Step 1: Open Adobe Reader.  Click on “Edit” then “Preferences”

Step 2: Select “Javascript” from the categories on the left and make sure that the “Enable Global Object Security Policy” box is unchecked.

Step 3: Click “Allow” one time only to clear the message.

Desktop Users – Mac

To access protected PDF content on a Mac, you must use the Adobe Reader PDF viewer. (Apple’s Preview application does not include key features required to view protected content.) The best way to do this is to change the default PDF viewer.

To change the default .pdf viewer:

1)     Make sure that the default .pdf viewer is set to ‘Adobe Reader’ and not ‘Preview. If you do not   have Adobe Reader go to:  http://get.adobe.com/reader/.

Once this is done, make sure that the default .pdf viewer has been changed.  To do this, click on the icon of the downloaded CoursePack from XanEdu which can be located by going to the ‘Downloads’ folder:

Hold the Control + click (or click with two fingers on newer MacBook models) on the icon for the selected .pdf file and choose ‘Get Info.’ It should look like this:

Once you have the ‘Get Info’ panel opened scroll down to ‘Opens With’ and select. Choose Adobe Reader from the drop down and Adobe Reader will be your default .pdf viewer:

Adobe Reader / Adobe Professional

Go to ‘Edit’ — ‘Preferences’ and scroll down to ‘JavaScript’ then make sure that the ‘Enable global object security policy’ box is unchecked (screenshot of Adobe Reader is on the left, Adobe Pro on the right:

Once this is done, you should scroll down to ‘Trust Manager’ and click on the ‘Change Settings’ button, once this is open, enter www.xanedu.com into the Host name field and click on the ‘Allow’ button:

Accessing the material

Log into XanEdu and highlight the CoursePack that you wish to view then click on the “View Selected CoursePack” button:

If the ‘Download’ button is available, feel free to click on that – if not – choose the article that you wish to view:

Select the ‘Download PDF’ button:

The next screen will indicate that the content is downloading and will then ask if you would like to open the file in Adobe Reader/Pro, select ‘Open with’:

Adobe will open next and you may see the following message which you will want to click “Yes”:

Please note, if you see the screen “you should not be seeing this and if you do, something went wrong” – please scroll down a bit and give the content a chance to download. Depending on the size of the PDF file, depends on the amount of time the process will take. Once the content is opened, you’ll want to do a ‘File’ and then ‘Save As’ and save it to your desktop. This will ensure that you will not only retain access to the file, but you will not have to log onto XanEdu and re-download the content each time you want to access it.

Additional Notes – Windows and Mac

  •  In order for Adobe to resolve these settings and authorize the content, only one protected PDF can be opened at a time.
  • When accessing from a work computer, it is possible that you do not have Administrative rights to make the necessary changes to view your content. You will want to have someone from your technical department assist in that instance.
  • Work/school anti-virus programs (specifically McAfee, Avast and Symantec) have reported issues in the past. This is an uncommon issue however, one that may require IT intervention.
