Finally!
A method book designed to teach the student how
to practice along with developing fundamental techniques in a
clear and logical order. The clarinet has it’s own unique set
of problems which can be very frustrating for beginning students.
This book is designed to help student and teacher alike, by creating
a step-by-step process that guarantees success. It begins with
the condition of the instrument, mouthpiece, and reed with recommendations
for good student level equipment. Then it continues into moderately
advanced concepts and techniques that will help any level clarinet
student build confidence and truly enjoy playing the instrument.
This method develops the fundamentals required to play effortlessly
throughout the entire range of the instrument and gives the student
a feeling of accomplishment with the turn of every page. This
is an exceptional method in its conciseness, and includes the
best-proven teaching techniques used by many of the great clarinet
teachers. A must for any level band class, private
clarinet teacher, or college woodwind methods class!
Marjorie Lehr In 1969, she began her studies with Dr. Frederick Westphal as a music major on clarinet at CSU Sacramento, graduating in 1973 on the Dean's Honor List with a BA in Music. She stayed to attain her Standard Life Elementary Classroom Teaching Credential and a Standard Life Secondary Teaching Credential, specializing in music. In 1974, she was hired by the San Juan School District to teach instrumental band, and still continues to do so at Mary A. Deterding Elementary School in Carmichael.
In 1992 she qualified as a Nationally Registered Music Educator, a Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Certificate, and in 1994, was chosen to conduct the 169- piece Elementary MENC Capitol Section Honor Band. Through her efforts and administrative support at Deterding, she has the only elementary band program in the San Juan School District where recorder is taught to all 4th graders, and band is taught as standard curriculum for all 5th and 6th graders during the regular school day. She is still an active clarinetist, currently performing with the Sacramento Symphonic Winds. She serves on the Board, is a substitute player in the clarinet section, and is Personnel/Business Manager for Sacramento's 38-piece professional wind and percussion ensemble--The California Wind Orchestra. This wind orchestra has recorded their first CD, in which she played, and is distributed by Summit Records.
In 1997 she became the San Juan District Coordinator of Elementary Bands working with a staff of between 15 and 20 teachers. In 1998 her book on how to start an elementary band program was published through MENC. She has since had two articles published in the national Teacher Magazine through MENC. In 2000 was presented the Film and Arts BRAVO Award, the Outstanding Contributions Award by the San Juan District, and the Excellence in Music Education Award by CMEA Capitol Section.

"I am delighted to have reviewed Margie Lehr's and David Ehrke's new book, Clarinets: How to Play in the Upper-Register. They don't miss a beat! The most basic explanations to the most advanced concepts are explained thoroughly and appropriately. They beautifully sequence learning experiences, so that success seems almost guaranteed."

"Margie Lehr's and David Ehrke's new book, Clarinets: How to Play in the Upper-Register, provides an excellent tutor for the beginning and advanced clarinet student alike. They present exercises and drills which can be used in group lessons, sectional rehearsals, and private lessons. Their approach is extremely "user-friendly," and will be especially beneficial for young Band Directors who have limited experience teaching the clarinet. Buy this book!"

"Finally! A fun, super-comprehensive method that tackles the "break monster" for students of all ages! No full-band method can devote the time and space to really get beginning clarinetists grounded in going "over the break" and playing comfortably in the upper register. Margie Lehr's and David Ehrke's book addresses these challenges in a fun, fully articulated set of studies. Imagine ending your first year band studies with ALL of your clarinetists playing over the break and beyond. This book can literally take your woodwind section to the next level!"
